CAHUITA AND PUERTO VARGAS NATIONAL PARK - This full day tour begins in the town of Cahuita. From there, you'll walk along a four-mile trail to Puerto Vargas, just beyond Cahuita Point. Along the way, you'll want to stop for a swim, a picnic, or to look for wildlife among the trees.

The park was formed to protect one of the last living reefs in Costa Rica, so you'll also want to try your hand at snorkeling in the warm waters. Several species of coral and fish have been counted in the area. The tour includes transportation, snorkeling equipment, a guide and lunch.

GANDOCA-MANZANILLO WILDLIFE REFUGE - This wild hike into the 22,000-acre Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is an excellent opportunity to search for local wildlife like howler monkeys, toucans, parrots, and other animals.

The huge trees in this tropical rainforest are covered with mosses, lichens, and bromeliads with beautiful orchids and other epiphytic plants cascading from the branches. This half day tour includes a tour guide, rubber boots, and transportation.

Take a trip on top of a kayak and paddle to Punta Uva or to Manzanillo within the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, which protects a coral reef 650 feet offshore, alive with glorious colorful tropical fish. A local guide will join you on the trip to point out wildlife along the way.

Paddle along the coast until you get to the coral reef for snorkeling. This vibrant reef includes 35 species of coral and 123 species of tropical fish. The tour includes transportation, equipment, and a tour guide.

The "Crazy Monkey Canopy Ride" at Almonds & Corals resort is a great way to experience the jungle from a perspective high among the treetops. You'll glide through the forest on a canopy cable system stopping at 10 platforms along the way.

The tour guides will point out wildlife along the way, and you'll also see a Bri-Bri Indian Village with traditional thatch-roof buildings. The half day tour has morning and afternoon departures, and includes transportation and a tour guide.

This 2 - 3 hour horseback riding tour departs from Puerto Viejo where a guide will meet you for a morning ride. You'll travel on white sand beaches along the Caribbean Sea and also venture into the jungle on trails that are surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

This tour departs at around 7:30 AM and includes transportation. A non-bilingual guide is included, so some knowledge of Spanish is helpful.

This tour begins with a stop at the local pulpería (store) in front of the Cocles football field to buy some snacks and a bottle of water. Then you'll ride along a narrow gravel road past colorful Caribbean-style houses.

You'll also visit Punta Uva, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, for a peaceful rest and some time admiring the magnificent view. The tour then continues on, while your guide points out many species of flora and fauna along the way. The tour includes a guide, bikes, and a snack.
