The Afro-Caribbean culture found in the Tortuguero region extends all the way to the southern Caribbean coast and gives this region a color all its own. Here you'll find
yourself surrounded by the aroma of delicious Costa Rican Creole cooking and the sounds of calypso and reggae music.
The ancestors of many people in this region were brought here from Jamaica or other Caribbean Islands to work on railroads or local banana plantations. This cultural melting pot
has resulted in a Spanish-English dialect unique to the area.

History & Culture

|
As this area has been accessable to tourists for only a few decades is has maintained most of its original charm. Puerto Limon, the capital of the Limon province, is a major banana
port, and several banana plantations are found in the region. Consider a trip to this fascinating city during carnival when the sleepy town transforms into party central.
If you're looking for a great place to kick back and relax, this is it. The laid back nature of the area is ideal for forgetting your worries and enjoying some fun in the sun.
The ocean here is calm, so it provides the perfect setting for a day on the beach or swimming in the surf.

Lodging & Dining
|
The remote lodges in the region offer a stunning jungle/beach experience with comfortable accommodations and plenty of activities to keep you busy. Beach access is available as well,
in case you feel like relaxing instead of adventuring. Both
Almonds and Corals and

The region features two fantastic parks that are not to be missed. Spend a day exploring either the Cahuita National Park or the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge wandering
wild rainforest trails, discovering gorgeous sandy beaches, navigating mangrove forests, or snorkeling in colorful coral reefs.
Kayaking is a great way to get up close and personal with the Caribbean Sea. With calm waters and exotic reefs, you'll be amazed at the marine life found here. Be sure to explore
the local rainforests and jungles while visiting this region. Canopy tours are a great way to experience the jungle from high in the treetops. If you prefer to stay closer to the
ground, try horseback riding or biking.
